How can I protect myself from COVID-19?

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid exposure.

A limited supply of vaccine is being distributed around the world. While the vaccines have shown a high level of effectiveness in preventing COVID-19 during their clinical trials, it’s important to remember that vaccine is just one part in the combination of tools available to help stop the pandemic. It’s necessary to continue to practice prevention recommendations, including:

  • Frequently washing your hands for at least 20 seconds using soap and water - or a hand sanitizer containing at least a 60% alcohol base.
  • Avoiding touching your face with unwashed hands.
  • Staying home as much as possible - especially if sick or experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet from other people.
  • Using a cloth face covering when in public settings where social distancing is not possible.
  • Monitoring yourself and your family for symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and then throwing away used tissues and washing your hands afterwards.
  • Frequently disinfecting commonly touched surfaces with a household cleaning product or bleach solution.
  • Avoiding people who may be at higher risk for severe illness.
  • Creating a plan for your family’s unique circumstances and knowing your employer’s, child care provider’s and/or care facility’s policies, as may be necessary.
