St. Charles County, Missouri – Military drills, cannon firings, bullet-making demonstrations and more are planned for Militia Encampment Weekend from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7 at The Historic Daniel Boone Home near Defiance. This free, family event, presented by the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department, is designed to give participants a glimpse into the life of soldiers from long ago.
As part of the event, history buffs won’t want to miss a book signing from
11 a.m.-12:45 p.m., Saturday, May 6, by local authors Dr. Anita Mallinckrodt and her brother, Hubert Mallinckrodt. The book, “Life with the Missouri River: – at Augusta, Mo,” showcases a history of the river's behavior in the Mt. Pleasant/Augusta River Valley area, especially during the 1915-1995 flood years. Unlike accounts of historic, dramatic floods in urban or regional areas, this is the story of an individual "river rat" family's repeated experiences with the frequent flooding of the "Big Muddy."
Additionally, a special plaque dedication ceremony will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 6, under The Grand Pavilion in the park in honor of Daniel Boone and his brother Nathan, for service in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, respectively. The dedication is sponsored by The Society of the War of 1812 in the State of Missouri and The Missouri Society of Sons of the American Revolution. The St. Charles County Police Honor Guard Unit will lead the Presentation of Colors and St. Dominic High School sophomore Jackie Lang will sing the National Anthem.
Paid guided-tours of The Historic Daniel Boone Home will be available at the top of every hour on both days, but admission to enter the park is free.
