St. Charles County, Missouri – Subject to confirmation by the St. Charles County Council at its March 28 meeting, St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann has appointed Mary Enger as Director of the Department of Communications. Upon approval, Enger will start the position on April 11.

“Mary’s excellent, extensive experience combined with her professionalism, longtime rapport with the community, and overall fantastic reputation will be an asset in building our new consolidated communications department,” said Ehlmann. “Her background demonstrates the ability to implement effective and measurable strategic communications programs, which will be valuable in developing plans for reaching our residents.”

Enger’s career spans public relations, media, marketing, journalism, employee relations, strategic planning and project management. She has served as Vice President and Communications Director for Henning Communications in St. Louis since 2014, directing planning and delivery of communications strategy and solutions for corporate, nonprofit, institutional and faith-based clients. Prior to Henning Communications, Enger worked for SSM Health Care – St. Louis for 24 years in several communications positions, most recently overseeing marketing and public relations for SSM St. Joseph Health Center, SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, SSM St. Joseph Health Center – Wentzville and SSM St. Joseph Medical Park. In this role, Enger was responsible for developing and managing the department’s budget, all internal and external communications and marketing, employee communications, physician communications/relations, marketing, advertising, health fairs and community events, media relations, and crisis management. Previous roles at SSM Health Care include Physician Services Representative for SSM St. Joseph Health Center and SSM St. Joseph Hospital West and Marketing and Public Relations Team Leader for SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

Prior to her career with SSM Health Care, Enger held communications positions at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Incarnate Word Hospital in St. Louis and Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. In addition, she served as a Bureau Chief with the Decatur Herald & Review in Decatur, IL, and as a Reporter/Photographer with the Daily American Republic in Poplar Bluff, MO.

Enger’s professional associations, community involvement, and honors are just as extensive and varied as her career. She has served on the Youth in Need Celebration of Youth Cabinet and Golf Committee; St. Charles County Road Board; United Services Public Relations and Development Committee; St. Peters Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Community Living, Inc. Board Member, Executive Board Member, Development Committee Chair, and Legacy Ball Chair; Healthy Communities of St. Charles County Board; and Habitat for Humanity St. Charles County Board. Along with her board and committee service, Enger has volunteered for Morning Star Church and Connections to Success. Enger’s award recognitions include StreetScape Magazine’s Beyond the Best: Top 50 in Business Award, Commerce Bank Community Service Award, Community Living, Inc. Volunteer of the Year, and Saint Charles Business Magazine Honors Program Award.

Enger received her Master’s Degree in Marketing from Webster University in St. Louis and her Bachelor of Arts in English from Southeast Missouri State University.
