St. Charles County, Missouri – If learning to kayak is on your bucket list, check out classes offered this summer through the St. Charles County Parks Department! Expert instructors from the Alpine Shop will teach beginner and intermediate classes in June, July and August at The Park at New Melle Lakes, 400 Foristell Road in New Melle; and Broemmelsiek Park, 1795 Highway DD in Defiance.
Beginner Kayak Classes:
- 10 a.m., Sunday, June 30 and 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, The Park at New Melle Lakes
- 10 a.m., Saturday, July 27, Broemmelsiek Park
This two-hour class focuses on the basics of safely paddling a kayak. Participants learn the rules of kayaking and on-water instruction of the Four Basic Strokes and Five Basic Maneuvers new paddlers need to know to control a kayak.
Intermediate Kayak Classes:
- 12:30 p.m., Sunday, June 30 and 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, The Park at New Melle Lakes
- 12:30 p.m., Saturday, July 27, Broemmelsiek Park
This three-hour class reviews topics covered in the beginner class and provides additional instruction for wet exits, self-rescues and assisted rescues. Participants also learn additional paddling techniques such as edging and low bracing to aid in kayak control.
Beginner Kayak Classes are $45 per person and Intermediate Kayak Classes are $65. To participate in the class, children must be able to wear an adult small-sized personal floatation device and be able to handle an adult-sized paddle by themselves without difficulty.
