As a parent and former educator and legislator, I
know that quality education is an integral part of ensuring a successful
community. As County Executive, I take education and its importance to our
families very seriously. The current situation with the Normandy School District
is a tragedy for the students left behind, a burden for students bused long
distances, and has left schools accommodating large numbers of students with no
guarantee of being paid. It is critical that the state quickly find a workable
solution for students in failing schools.
While we cannot tell the schools what to do, what
happens is important to the sustainability of the county. We commissioned a
study and I invite you to read an editorial I wrote in the Oct. 29 edition of
the St. Louis Post-Dispatch calling for a solution – for the Missouri Department
of Elementary and Secondary Education to appoint a Special Administrative Board
for the Normandy School District. The link to the article is below. If you feel as strongly about this issue as I do,
contact your state elected officials and encourage them to take action.
